You hear it in colleges, where you can pay the equivalent of the median American salary just to attend courses with titles like “Jews and Racial Privilege.” You hear it wherever our bien pensants congregate to show one another their virtues and pledge allegiance to their new radical religion.
How to make sense of this?…
And yet, even these objections, solemn as they may be, don’t begin to capture the weight of the argument that Jews are somehow white. Take a moment to acquaint yourself, even in passing, with our stiff-necked people, and it’s the following observation that is likely to register very near the top: We stand out precisely because we don’t fit in. Is Judaism a religion? Sure. Are Jews a nation? Yes. Do we share genetic traits? Offer us dairy and find out. Do we come in all shapes, sizes, and skin colors? Amen selah. This is why I, a ninth-generation Israeli whose ancestors arrived in Jerusalem from the backwaters of the Austrian Empire, can amble into the Slat al-Azama synagogue in Marrakesh, or the Beth Yaakov Synagogue in Geneva, or the Ohel Leah Synagogue in Hong Kong, look around and see faces that vary wildly, and yet rest assured that when services start we will all recite, in more or less the exact same fashion, the ancient words that Jews have spoken in daily prayer for millennia.
If this kind of image—black Jews and white Jews, European Jews and African Jews, educated wealthy Jews and barely literate poor Jews all understanding one another perfectly because they belong to the same strange family—strikes you as too flimsy, consider the criteria put forth by José Martínez Cobo, an anthropologist engaged by the United Nations to serve as special rapporteur on discrimination against indigenous populations, as to what makes a people “indigenous.”
To fit the bill, he argued, peoples and nations should display one or more of the following: occupation of ancestral lands; common ancestry; a shared culture or religion; and a shared language. By any and all metrics at our disposal—archeology, history, theology, even DNA tests—Jews, if anything, are the indigenous people of the Land of Israel, from which they might have been exiled now and then but to which they always return.”

We’re our own thing, and whatever privilege we possess is conditional in the European and Arab Conquistadors’ diasporas.
As a Jew that grew up secular, think Marxist for a reference, I was shocked when I immigrated to the United States proper. I am from a place where I was “the other” at times, but was generally “a native”, one of the people by upbringing. By United States of Colonial America standards, I was a “white” presenting Jew in a predominantly brown 🤎 human world. I saw myself in youth as one of the “brown” and NEVER questioned this, even when occasionally profiled and targeted – solely based upon my presenting skin color.
When I came to United States proper, I experienced an extreme culture shock. First, just with trying to get a license to drive in my new USA State, the black woman before me scratched out my “Race” answer and declared me “White”. From, then on, I had “white card” privilege in the United States, despite not feeling any bit “white” in this American world. In time, I discovered just how racially divided the United States of Colonial America really is. There are many ghettos of all ethnicities in the United States of Colonial America.
A “melting pot” of humans is a misnomer, when applied to the United States! I grew up in an island ghetto of gentrification informed by land investors from the United States. So, I found myself finding my way and living very comfortably in the ghetto of the USA. It seemed normal to me, even though my new neighborhood looked upon me as “popo” living in their midst. There was nothing I did to justify this judgement, only my skin and hair color is obviously too white to be here!
Then I discovered – in person and firsthand – racist wordings that made no direct in person sense in the world that I grew up in. But, in the United States…?!
This is where I became afraid that the United States culture of racist Apartheid would leave me “choosing sides” in the USA, against my raised inherent worldview. And, worse, I became fearful that hearing “nigger” and “cracker” and all these other hateful words was going to lead me into someday, in my old age, expressing – in aged insanity and lack of control – one of these taught USA racism words! I still worry decades later about this.
You all “Americans” don’t realize just how dangerous your USA created and indoctrinated and exported racism affects this entire world, once we’ve been exposed to your United States of Colonial America “exceptionalism”! We Jews understand that we are the original European “niggers” in this world, regardless our skin color. And white passing Jews are understandable in their pining for “whiteness” recognition in the USA – despite that they reject everything that is truly native Jewish in their behaviors to achieve this!
Jews come inherently in ALL skin colors and looks because of – BOTH – human migration and European – AND – Arab militarily forced settler Colonialism. Our Jewish people’s native festival of Pesach is really a festival of eating מצות “unleavened breads” for seven days, basic survival foods that requires minimal preparation.
Kitniyot – rice, legumes, beans, and grains – that are swelled by water and then cooked to drain or suck out the water are all examples of מצה “unleavened bread” when use in such a way. It takes little time to knead and cook מצה, because חמץ “yeast” is not used to swell by souring – aka, “fermenting” – the לחם “bread, food”.

In the 1800’s, Jews indigenous to our Canaan land of Israel began our land and waters restoration projects, in preparation for peaceful and secure native Jewish sovereignty under new Ottoman imperial rule. We made the land of Israel fertile again and cleared the malaria filled waters, as only Indigenous peoples know how to do sustainably upon their sacred lands. We had help from Jews returning to their native land from Yemen and Europe. Our Jewish efforts were so successful that Arab settlers began to arrive in large numbers to take advantage of our Jewish people’s land prosperity.
Prior to World War 1, having learned what Jews were doing to re-establish Native sovereignty upon our Canaan land – our Zion, our Judea and Samaria – the Arabian royal Hashemite family made pact with the British to war against and take our Canaan land from the Ottoman Empire, in order to establish Hashemite rule, thus preventing a Jewish return to sovereignty. With the British-pan-Arab military occupation of our land of Israel after WW1, the land of Israel became officially named colonial “Palestine” by the European and Arab invaders – having taken this title from the Roman Empire’s occupation name for our sacred land.
Now, having colonial possession of our Canaan land of Israel, the British rewarded the Hashemite king of Arabia with two-thirds of our historic land of Israel – what is known as Colonial “Jordan” today. And, with the remainder – from the river to sea – the British proved once again that Colonizers cannot be trusted to keep their words with the Indigenous people of the land. The pan-Arab settlers began to attack native Jews to lay claim to ALL of Judea and Samaria, forcing Jews to smuggle in weapons and fight back against these colonists.
The more our Jewish people succeeded in our near two decade battle for Independence, the more the British called us “terrorists” for fighting their British-pan-Arab military occupation and rule upon our Canaan land of Israel. Though extremely outnumbered and even after the Arab settlers joined the Nazi Party to spread the European Holocaust targeting the Jewish people into all of Arab-occupied Southwest Asia, we native Jews forced the British off our land and declared our decolonized sovereign Independence in 1948.

It’s a “nakba” because they failed to re-conquer all of our native Israeli land! From 1949 until 1967, Colonial Jordan occupied and tried to annex what they named the “West Bank” of our sovereign nation of Israel. And, for the same period of time, Egypt occupied Gaza. These non-native non-Southwest Asian nations lost their occupational control over all parts of our sovereign indigenous nation of Israel in 1967. Here, begins the non-citizen Arab political land-squatting upon our sovereign Jewish people’s land.
With the help of the Soviet Union and the United Nations of Arab-European colonial nations, these Arab settler occupiers reinvented their colonial history, by declaring the 20th century Arab settlers and the occupying Colonial Jordanian and Egyptian citizens as the “Palestinian people” – who are now through all generations – an eternal “refugee” population, UNTIL Israeli sovereignty fails and they achieve their “right of return” to all of our historic Canaan land of Israel as the Arab settler colonists that they literally are!
To ensure that the entire European and Arab settler colonized world believes that these pan-Arab nationalist settlers are seen as the victim population, they further got the United Nations of Arab-European Colonial nations to declare Zionism (Jewish indigenous sovereignty upon Zion, our Canaan land of Israel) as racism against these pan-Arab nationalist settler colonists who are occupying our 1948 forcibly decolonized sacred Israeli land. The Haggadah’s insistence that God, without an intermediary, saved the Israelites from Egypt is a veiled retort to the Christian belief that God relied on Jesus as an agent of redemption. It wasn’t so long ago, in 1950 through the 1960s when Jews had no future left in their ancient Jewish communities all over the Middle East and North Africa. 850,000 Jews were kicked out or forced to flee. 650,000 Jews, refugees from Arab lands, settled in transit camps, the maabarot, dirt poor, struggling to survive Israel, haunted by the Holocaust and hate.
As an adult, I always knew I could choose what my parents didn’t, aliyah. Life got in my way, not everyone gets to make aliyah. But no matter whether we get to live in Israel or not, our self-esteem as Jews is raised tenfold by the fact that we have Israel.
It breaks my heart and boggles my mind that increasingly, American Jews feel “distancing” themselves from Israel consciously or unconsciously, is a sustainable position.
Don’t we Diaspora Jews know we need Israel – If not for anything else but our self esteem?
The importance of Israel should not escape us. Not just a place to flee Iraq as my mother did after the Farhud, the pogrom in Baghdad, or Nasser as my father did, not because the Holocaust happened or as possible future victims of Pogroms – Not just that. But because as long as Israel exists, we are represented as a People, mirrored and homed.

Israel, like each and every human, is not perfect. If we demand perfection, if we imagine ourselves as Israel and look in the mirror and expect what Snow White’s stepmother expected, we are in trouble.

This midrash passage of Talmud does NOT say that G-d miraculously gave the man lactating breasts by which to feed his baby child. And our Jewish Talmud also rejects the idea that G-d must intervene in human affairs with miracles in order for humans to survive, to have direction,… to be saved.
So, a SCIENCE question, how did this man feed his baby as a male and, especially, with no lactating wet nurse to be found?
