There are three “Ten Commandments” in our Canaanite Hebrew language Jewish Torah. Two are very similar and one is way older. Which of these Ten Proclamations are we Jews expected to follow? For the purpose of THIS post, let’s do something more important for the United States of Colonial America!
Here, below, is what every United States citizen should be re-learning in every yearly grade of school education, until ultimate final graduation – and, at the very least, until High School graduation:
There is a set of ten (10) proclamations that every student in the United States of Colonial America SHOULD be reciting every single day – given that since reciting the entire United States Constitution is too difficult for United States citizens (though surprisingly easy to learn for immigrants who are seeking citizenship in the United States of Colonial America).
The Ten United States Commandments are as follows.
1 – Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “I am the Lord your God. Do not have other gods before my face”.)
2 – A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not make any image representation of a god”.)
3 – No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not invoke the name of ‘G-d’ in vain” in your promises”.)
4 – The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Remember the Sabbath day, the weekly day-of-resting, to sanctify it” – USA citizens are privileged to have two days off every week, courtesy of workers’ labor unions!)
5 – No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not socially disgrace your father and your mother”, ALTHOUGH THIS IS SO IMPORTANT, for we are all fallible human beings.)
6 – In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not illegally kill, aka murder”.)
7 – In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not have sex with a married woman, aka no adultery”.)
8 – Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not kidnap, aka steal human beings”, for in the 21st century CE this should be a given obvious!)
9 – The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not present false testimony, aka lie to a court of law”, which also should be, by now, a given obvious in this 21st century CE.)
10 – The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
(It’s a lot more relevant than, “Do not covet your neighbors’ possessions and achievements” – follow the law of the land or challenge it in a court of law.)

The reason for this post is now as follows: “We learn so much about Rabbis [of the Talmud], the way they thought about things…” when we embrace the anti-feminism archetypes that are shared in many Rabbinical stories.
For those who have read Talmud – but not studied Talmud – you probably had a visceral instant judgement about what this quoted sentence directly above (in the above paragraph) means.
The Rabbis, the ancestral elders of Talmud writing times, they were chauvinistic and misogynistic, no? But, how well do you actually know you’re ancestral elders?
“The Rabbis almost consistently, but not always consistently, invoke these archetypes in order to deconstruct them… That this woman is way more complex than the one dimensional archetype that you took her to be.
And the fact that you took her to be it [on plain reading of the story] ought to tell you something about the way you misread the characters in the text. … And, also, about the way you misread and mistreat the characters in your lives.” – Gila Fine, Talmud scholar and lecturer of rabbinic literature at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies.
The Talmud teaches that “Torah scholars are similar to women. Rabbis are physically weak and delicate, just like women. Rabbis are indoor creatures, just like women. Rabbis are politically powerless, just like women” [remember, it’s the 2nd to 4th century CE].
Likewise it is so “for the entire Jewish people. Rabbinic Judaism is created by men in a deeply patriarchal culture and, yet, it was very much created in the likeness of women.” How so?!
The Talmudic world is born out of statelessness and suffering, the loss of “national sovereignty. Jews were to others, what women were to men [in this time period]. They [Jews] were subordinate and defenseless [upon our own land]. They were politically disempowered and sometimes they were physically persecuted.” The midrash teaches that “the pains of the people of Israel are like the pains of a woman during childbirth.”
For Jews who love embracing our Jewish Talmud, we know that, when we read a Rabbinical story, we must read it MORE than once. The first time is to appreciate every detail in the story, even if we find the subject matter distasteful or uncomfortable. Our elders presented this story for us to learn from, thus we must not read it just once. At least twice or, preferably, more.
Any experienced Talmud reader knows that the teaching is not in the plain reading of the story. So, on the second reading, we must expand our vision and understand this story within the fuller context that surrounds it. A Rabbinic story is like a single verse in a poem. Truly understanding this verse can only be achieved by reading all the verses together. This is where we begin the act of learning from our ancestral elders.
What Torah scholar Gila Fine does is she expands the action of comparison for understanding to a level where even the hidden emotions that are not overtly expressed in the story’s reading are suddenly released, and the story that the Rabbis of the Talmud intended for you to digest is now self-evident. It is never enough to read or listen, hence why we Jews say, “now go study”! So, do so.
Both Christians and Muslims…. If you actually think that you give a damn about Jews then, please, LISTEN to a 1990’s Jewish refugee from Lebanon explain how Jews have to survive both Christianity and Islam in the Southwest Asia region – to this EFFING 21st century CE day! …
